Brenner-Havelka-Plessl

The Italian-Czech-Austrian artist collective Brenner-Havelka-Plessl came together during their studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. They joined forces to merge their artistic competencies and challenge viewers with stories—both beautiful and abject—intended to disrupt habitual ways of seeing. In addition to dialectical approaches, the collective actively seeks dialogical forms of communication that allow for an open-ended exchange of intentions and experiences. This fosters deeper understanding and empathy. "broken-yet-holding", offers insight into their collaborative process and the evolution of their practice. What was once decided individually is now negotiated collectively. This transformation begins with shedding old behaviors and prejudices to make room for a new identity. The original is torn apart, symbolizing a liberation from social stigmas and inherited bias. These torn fragments are then reassembled and collaged together. This process becomes a form of self-actualization—a way to create a new, self-determined life not defined by the past. This symbolic shedding is an act of release in which the unspeakable —the wounds of the past—is transformed into a creative and healing process. Mental health is the core concern of the collective. It encompasses the capacity to cope with daily life challenges, regulate emotions, maintain relationships, and lead a life that feels fulfilling and meaningful. The collective does not offer guidance toward a better or healthier life. Instead, through public exhibitions, talks, and workshops, they seek to destigmatize mental illnesses such as anxiety disorders, depression, and emotional or psychological difficulties.Stigmatization and taboo are deeply rooted forces that can prevent people from seeking help when needed. This exhibition encourages a more open and empathetic discourse around mental health, aiming to foster understanding, challenge prejudice, and support those in need.
