Product Description

Oil on canvas
Being underwater is a state that alters perception and control. The artist compares this sensation to the experience of being seen as a minority. In the midst of multiple crises, a society based on solidarity is crucial; this means giving visibility and security to all people and respecting their identities. In her work, Ahoo Maher invites us to dive into a pool of experiences, emotions and realities, encouraging the viewers to find their own stories or to pay more mindulfness to the stories of others.

Inspired by the genre of miniature painting, the scenes are presented in small formats with slightly distorted perspectives, emphasising their two-dimensionality. The figures depicted defy categorisation: they are diverse but do not conform to any norms, whether in terms of skin colour, shape, gender identity or political orientation.

The interplay between painting and installation creates new imaginative spaces that convey a small part of the feeling of being underwater. Water becomes a metaphor for social notions of majority and belonging, and submersion becomes an act of invisibility.
