Lavinia Lanner’s drawings are made up of
fine, concentrated pencil strokes that form
abstract, amorphous shapes. By enlarging
these forms and placing them in new
contexts, she gives them new meanings
and explores the space between ambiguity
and clarity.
Lanner works exclusively with 3B pencil on
paper. By layering many individual strokes,
she creates subtle tonal variations, depth,
and a three-dimensional effect. At the same
time, working only in black and white draws
attention to contrast, rhythm, and space
Particularly in her large-scale works, the act
of drawing takes on an increasingly physical
dimension and expands beyond the boundaries
of the sheet into space. Her installations
are experienced through movement and
changing viewpoints, bringing drawing into a
dialogue with image, object, and space.
