rural shades, büryan

Product Description

The series “rural shades” deals with everyday practices of rural life in Eastern Anatolia. A projection is created with digital and analogue documentation of the symbiosis of nature and man in rural areas. The central subject matter is the historical developments since the beginning of the 20th century. The relationship between the different religious and ethnic minorities and their assimilation are particularly relevant here. My mother’s village in the provincial town of Erzincan in the district of Çayırlı (formerly Piriz) is the starting point of the series and is intended to create an arc between today and the traces of Armenian life in the region.

The transformative process of the medium of photography and the accompanying projections/forms convey the complexity of the subject matter. The focus will be on everyday practices in rural areas and traces of historical events related to Armenians. 3D models are generated from the photographs and milled into wood or 3D printed.

The slaughter of animals on certain occasions is an integral part of traditional practices in Anatolia. The meat is prepared and cooked in an earth oven (tandır). This special way of cooking is called büryan. As a collective gesture, the meat is shared with the villagers.
