Born in Salzburg in 1966, the sculptor creates wooden sculptures that oscillate between abstract geometric forms and concrete figurative images. With his chopped wall pictures and chopped and sawn heads, Haberpointner demonstrates how innovatively he has approached the material of wood and freed himself from the roots of craft-based naturalistic wood sculpture.
He is concerned with form, especially with the treatment of wood in all its possible nuances and shades. Haberpointner subjects his sculptures to powerful mechanical processing that leaves traces on the works. By striking, chopping, and burning, textures are created that condense into a graphic surface on the artworks, devoid of any mathematical rigor and exuding a special aura.
